Creating a fluid and sculptural architectural shell for a renovated home and introducing that innovative structure as a significant protagonist of the interior composition is quite a popular approach in recent years. It is like using clay to model your life vibe, making it comfy and fitting like a glove, making this artistic protective shell revolve around your needs and tastes is a challenge in modern architecture and design.
In this case, an innovative, even radical approach towards renovating and inhabiting historical housing united the efforts of FLOW Architecture in collaboration with London-based architect MAGRITS into reimagining the spatial fluidity and light distribution of this restored Victorian terraced house. The architects preserved the Victorian brick façade of the house but, in reality, completely rebuild its bone structure in order to improve the light destitution and the space flow, hence creating a lively ambiance very fitting for the name of the project – Light Falls.
A sculptured staircase connects the five floors of the contemporary space inside, and unusual landscaping (revolving around an old walnut tree) surrounds the Victorian façade. The cascading effect of light that goes throughout the center of the home is enhanced by the unusual geomantic of the spaces, the spaces’ double-height configuration, and by multiple custom-made joinery items that define the sculptural character of the project. In reality, the artistry incorporated in building this modern home makes it appears sculptured rather than build and is quite a fitting partner for the art objects and furniture collection.
Echoing the sculptural geometry and the minimalist sophistication of the project’s idea, the interior configuration is opting for bespoke items – the light installations and handcrafted joinery come to mind – that give unique and artistic character to the interior without contradicting the expressive features of the architectural shell. Fluid connection between interior and exterior, smooth curves and open premises host an increasing art collection of the owners, and minimal but comfortable furnishing sustained in the best traditions of modern and trendy design- an entwinement that secures elegant and comfortable lifestyle. Attention to each small detail and unusual design angels give an identity to the piece of art, which is this modern home.
Not only the light installations of the amazing wooden and textile details, which compose the premises, are with a strong presence- like exhibition pieces – but also small design ideas are quite notable. The series of bespoke joinery pieces throughout the interior, which were designed with special cut-out handles and engraved with graphic designs, come to mind. Or the cute water drop brass accents in the bathroom help create this unique and sophisticated ambiance. There are many beauty, art, and elegant lines to be discovered in this modern renovation project – enjoy its sculptural fluidity and innovative space configuration. Photo: NAARO;
