A dream mezzanine in historic Madrid, Spain – an exquisite and luminous dwelling that connects two floors in 1914’s building and creates a link between tradition and modern spirit. The Swiss studio Wespi De Meuron Romeo Architects and Ábaton Arquitectura formed tandem to carry out the integral reform of the house, and the team of the Batavia was in charge of the interior design – so with so many loving hands on board no wonder the final result is mesmerizing. Enjoy it as we did. The clear-lined whiteness of the contemporary architectural shell is a magnificent scene for the sensual touches of color that come from the different pieces of boutique furniture, art paintings, and textile components.
The lower floor was an apartment with traditional plaster decorations on ceilings and windows, elements with a historical and aesthetic value that were kept in remembrance of the building’s past. The seventh floor, the attic where the storage rooms used to be was transformed into a diaphanous space with direct access to the terrace. The open plan space consists of living room, dining zone and kitchen all decided in minimalist contemporary style, which serves as the perfect setting for the iconic Clavé armchairs or the most exquisite Mélange kilims by nanimarquina.
The unusual gable roof shape gives a dynamic and unique character to space. Intriguing architectural shapes decided in unostentatious whiteness can be seen throughout the apartment- niches, unexpected corners, and shapes, or even a bathtub in the master bedroom – a very trendy approach towards bathing experience. All this sustained in the minimalist aesthetics of modern times with vital touches of retro pieces of furniture, trendy lamps, soft textures, charming colors and abundance of natural light. A delightful, chic space in the heart of Madrid – from the romantic terrace (with jacuzzi nonetheless) that enjoys breathtaking views of the magnificent historical architecture of the neighborhood, to the simple functionalism and relaxing style of the inner premises.
