Abstract landscapes that invoke melancholy, monochromatic colors fill the canvas.
Matthieu van Riel paints landscapes on the boundary of abstraction and realism. Dutch and Scandinavian landscapes are the starting points for his paintings. Although he is an enthusiastic hiker in rough nature, it is not nature itself he is actually interested in towards his paintings, but rather the perception of the landscape. His works are the result of the formal approach to landscape, it is about flatness in Dutch landscapes, about emptiness, light and darkness, space and air.
