Natalie Mather is a painter who is interested in the process of a work’s construction, that is, how a “finished” work emerges from a series of drawn and painted layers. Mather’s work is concerned with paint as a material, a material that can be applied, manipulated and compressed to create forms that evoke the geological, the mystic and the architectural. Natalie aims to make paintings that are essentially precious objects, but arise out of a practice that rejects preciousness in favour of the provisional and the experimental.
